The Dark Knight Returns #1 - February 1986

With Batman v Superman set to open very soon, there's one image from the new movie that was lifted directly from this cover. The Dark Knight Returns issue #1. I love this cover because it is from the comic series that redefined the Batman character and in large part superheroes in general. Until then, if you were familiar with Batman, most likely you knew Adam West's 1966 golly-gee Batman. Or you knew the 80's Superfriends cartoons where all the superhero characters were pretty much the same, they just wore different costumes and had different super powers. This comic made Batman a the dark, psychologically damaged person he should be and it gave comic book writers the permission to create more complex superheroes and write more intelligent stories. It's because of Frank Miller's Batman we got Tim Burton's Batman, Bruce Timm's Batman, Chris Nolan's Batman and now Batfleck.  - Chris, Faces & Aces LV Podcast
